How to Take Your Thoughts Captive Biblically

Taking your thoughts captive means learning to notice what is going on in your mind and bringing those thoughts back under the truth of God. Our self-talk can either build us up in faith or pull us into worry, regret, fear, or temptation.

The Bible says that as a man thinks, so is he. That is why it matters what we allow our minds to dwell on throughout the day.

Why Our Thoughts Matter

We need to observe the thoughts we are having on a day-to-day basis. People tend to think about past situations or future events, and those thoughts can lead to regret and worry.

When we place our thought process on things above, we receive peace from above. God is delighted when we hold every thought captive, and through this discipline we are able to enjoy more peace and joy throughout the day.

Redirecting Your Mind to God

When thoughts arise that are contrary to God’s Word, we should take a step back and redirect that thought to a heavenly thought. This is part of living with the mind of Christ.

Guarding our thoughts leads to being more present with the Lord. I have come to a point where I try to filter my thoughts and place them on godly things, such as spiritual gifts, pleasing the Lord, and walking in obedience.

Self-Control Takes Practice

Self-control is a discipline at first, but it can be achieved through daily practice. Throughout the day, we may struggle with uncontrolled thoughts. When we give attention to them, we give them life.

But when we practice self-control, we hold ourselves accountable and begin to gain a Christ-centered thought process. Can you imagine how this simple act of obedience could transform your life?

The Peace That Comes With a Renewed Mind

Fixing our thoughts on God and His ways seems to lighten the load of worry and doubt. The Bible teaches us not to worry, and we should rest in that peace and be still.

I have come to realize there is a special kind of peace and comfort that you experience throughout your day when your mind is fixed on the Lord. You have more assurance that you are on the righteous path God has put you on.

After practicing this, it becomes more natural not to give attention to self-destructive thought patterns. You become set free from continual thoughts day in and day out and start to live more in the present moment.

A Simple Way to Start

Start by asking God to help you recognize the thoughts that are not from Him. When one comes up, stop, pray, and replace it with truth from God’s Word. Over time, this can become a more natural way of thinking.
